  • Crayon Rocks Help: Since a child's first writing tool is usually a crayon, that crayon should be one that encourages him or her to use the thumb, first and second fingers in a tripod grip. This is what makes Crayon Rocks a wonderful tool for fine motor development. Because of their shape, they do not allow kids to easily grip them in a closed fist which deters fine motor development and are also more resistant to breaking.
  • Safety: Certified non-toxic and conform to ASTM 4236. They are CPSIA compliant. You can eat the crayons if you want, but PLEASE don't inhale them. They ARE a choking hazard. Not for children under 3 years of age or those who will put them in their mouth. Use with an appropriate level of supervision.
  • Made: Unlike most crayons which are made of petrolium paraffin wax, Crayon Rocks are made from U.S.–grown and processed Kosher soy wax.

Crayon Rocks were developed by Barbara Lee, a special needs teacher who worked with elementary aged children for 23 years. She invented Crayon Rocks after being inspired by occupational therapist Jan Olsen and her Handwriting Without Tears program. She learned from Mrs. Olsen how important it was for children to develop a strong tripod grip early in their education process — handwriting skills depend upon this.

  • We moved our small crayon making business from the hectic streets of Greater Los Angeles where a typical business day had me in stop and go traffic on hot and dangerous highways 4 hours a day to Hestand, KY where a traffic jam is a mule drawn wagon with a tail gating horse. Hestand, KY is literally no place.... a fork in the road. Nothing surrounds me but beautiful Kentucky hills and valleys with Amish farmers and their families. Crayon Rocks is an extension of my life long professional commitment to the development of young children, especially those with special needs. I just don’t think the heart and soul that goes into making, packing and shipping our crayons could be done overseas by people very disconnected from the life of children in America. And, besides, it’s fun. My shop is so remote we don’t have a landline BUT if you have cell service, USPS and UPS you can ship all over the world....and we do including places like Russia, Canada, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Australia, China, all over Europe and South Africa. – Crayon Rocks
